The graduate program at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) provides practical training and experience in a museum setting in conjunction with an intensive course of study in the history of the contemporary visual arts, the institutions and practices of exhibition making, and the theory and criticism of the visual arts in the modern period. The program is broadly interdisciplinary.

Its international faculty includes curators and other museum professionals, scholars in the humanities and social sciences, artists, and critics.

The two-year curriculum is specifically designed to deepen students¡¯ understanding of the intellectual and practical tasks of curating exhibitions and projects around contemporary art, particularly within the complex social and cultural situations of present-day arts institutions, as well as focusing intensively on interpretive and critical writing.

The Center initiated its graduate program in curatorial studies in the fall of 1994. More than 100 curators, critics, scholars, artists, and other arts professionals have taught seminars or lectured in practicums and courses since the program began. The Center¡¯s alumni now include more than 150 figures working prominently in the field in the U.S. and abroad.

Resources include access to The Marieluise Hessel Collection, the extensive holdings of which are held in The Hessel Museum of Art at the Center for Curatorial Studies. Also on site are the CCS Bard Library and Archives, which contain over 25,000 books and periodicals including an extensive collection of exhibition catalogs and monographs on individual artists. The Archives contain institutional archives documenting the exhibition history of CCS Bard and the Hessel Museum, the organizational archives of select galleries and art spaces, the personal papers of prominent curators, and study collections which document significant international curators and a selection of historic exhibitions.
